It was about 38 degrees and I was busy working in my car when I looked up to find a thin teen-aged girl with a sweatshirt on.
She asked me if I had a dollar. She spoke in such a soft voice I had to ask her to repeat what she just said. Then she told me she really just wanted to get a hotel room and take a shower. She was homeless and she just needed a dollar more to be able to get a hotel room for $58.00.
Her eyes had circles under them and I was sure she had not had a good night’s sleep in quite awhile.
She reached into her pocket to show me the fact that she had $57.00. I didn’t bother to count the money. I gave her a dollar and her face lit up.
I offered to give her a ride to the hotel but she let me know that all she needed was the dollar so that she could take a shower. She screamed, “Thank you Ma’am,” a couple of times as she ran away with a big smile on her face.
Somehow 38 degrees seemed a lot warmer. I find myself thinking of this girl and wondering how she is doing. I was touched by the fact that she was so happy to have my small gift and she wouldn’t even accept a ride to the hotel. She knew exactly what she wanted and was very appreciative to receive it.
