What is the Cowlitz County Syringe Exchange?
The Syringe Exchange allows people who use injection drugs to:
- Get clean needles and reduce the spread of disease caused by reusing and sharing needles. Sharing needles and other drug use equipment can cause the transmission of HIV, Hepatitis B and C and other blood borne infections.
- We exchange syringes on a one for one basis.
- Dispose of used needles safely and keep the community safe from potential exposure to used injection drug equipment.
- Receive health services such as HIV testing, hepatitis A and B immunizations, and referrals (including drug treatment) to other community agencies.
A few rules:
- Do not come to the syringe exchange under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- No loitering.
- No dealing or using drugs in the parking lot or on the DAPC property.
- Do not bring children to the syringe exchange or you will be turned away.
- No smoking. The DAPC property is a tobacco-free zone.
- When driving through the parking lot, do so at a safe speed.
- Maximum number of syringes exchanged is 350 per person.
- Staff have the final say. Unacceptable attitudes or fighting will not be tolerated.
