Located in Western Washington, Katie’s Place has been home to hundreds of animals since 1985. Bruce and Laura are involved in both domestic and wildlife rescue and rehab. Their goal is to release all wildlife back into the wild to live the life God intended for them to live, and to ensure that all domestic pets get knowledgeable, loving, caring forever homes. Katie’s Place is not limited to dogs and cats, they also care for many other species; reptiles, birds, rodents, as well as the occasional exotic pet that has been relinquished.

It’s about time these two wonderful people get some recognition. Bruce and Laura have done amazing things with the animals in their care, and they do it all out of pocket on their small fixed income. I have seen countless animals arrive sick, neglected, emotionally abused and watched them blossom under their loving care. They seem to have a special place in their hearts for the less than perfect ones, whether its a disability or a face only a mother could love. I don’t know how they manage it, but I am so glad they do, as I don’t know where some of those little ones would have ended up otherwise. If you ever have the occasion to have to go somewhere with them, be prepared to stop for every injured or dead animal on the street. They believe its not only disrespectful to the animal to leave it laying there, but dead animals lure other animals in to investigate, putting them in harms way as well. Wonderful people, both of them!
I’ve known Laura for years; we met because we both rescue hedgehogs, especially those with Wobbly Hedgehog Syndrome. Laura’s compassion for the animals in her care – domestic, exotic, and wildlife – and her attentiveness to their needs, especially for those who are special needs or requiring extra TLC, is inspiring. She is always willing to do what is needed for the animal, selflessly, without bragging or taking credit for the miracles she works.
She is also there for other animal caretakers: middle of the night emergency with an orphaned possum? She answers the phone and immediately provides the information required to get the baby through the night. And when a little one doesn’t make it, she’s there to listen, with sympathy and comfort, providing reassurance.
I cannot speak – or think – more highly of Laura and Bruce. They are truly selfless in giving of themselves to the animals with whom we share this beautiful world. It may sound trite, but they are my heroes.
I had the pleasure of meeting Laura and Bruce not that long ago. I was blown away by what they manage to accomplish on a shoestring budget. They are wonderful people, and it’s obvious that theirs is a mission of love. Glad that there are people like you in the world.
