Salvation Army

Our guest speaker was Captain David Davis from the Salvation Army.  Captain Dave gave us a little history about the Salvation Army.  The Salvation Army is 150 years old!  While they take care of social needs, they are first and foremost a church.  A few of the things they do for the community is to provide wholesome and delicious lunches everyday at the Longview Corp. Building.  On Monday, Wednesday and Friday they offer food boxes to those in need.

Captain Dave says he would not be able to do all of the social service for the community without the help of businesses in the area. They also have a church service at 10AM Then  there is a woman’s bible study on Wednesday from 6PM-7PM.  Captain Dave has a mobile kitchen that is available for emergency events like floods and other natural disasters.  The Salvation Army tries to create a multi-generational feeling by having events for all age groups. Once a month there is a free lunch for seniors with senior entertainment and they also have a youth service for the youth on Tuesday nights.

The Salvation Army has just won a long fought battle to successfully purchase the old Electra Hotel. There is a program called 4 The Long View that will help single people and married couples in need of housing and a hand up succeed.  The 4 in the name of the program stands for the basic needs these tenants will have: Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual. In the past the Salvation Army would simply give people vouchers to stay in a hotel. But this system left no room for accountability.  The hotel will really offer those that stay there an opportunity to make a plan for their lives so that they will be thriving in a set period of time.  The Salvation Army feels as though this is a much needed service and they look forward to watching lives change for some of our homeless population.  More information about the 4 Long View Program can be garnered by call 360-423-3992.

New Business

Summer brought a fund-raising idea to the group.  We could sale punch tickets for those fabulous Cowlitz Black Bears.  The tickets will be sold for $20.00 per punch ticket.  We would also have a night at the park where we could set up our information at a table and talk to people about what we do with the community.  We will try to get Saturday, July 14th. A motion was made by Tom Stebbins to purchase the punch tickets. The motion was seconded by John Coleman. After a vote, we decided that Living Ministries will purchase punch tickets to sale for the fabulous Cowlitz Black Bears!  We will purchase 10 punch tickets to start the season. We may purchase more later.

Letterhead

The group viewed Summer’s new idea for a letterhead.  The colored letterhead was chosen.  We elected to use both the front and back of the sheet. A donation block will be incorporated into the letter. To save space the address will be incorporated next to the logo on top. A second draft will be ready for review at our next meeting. We will take out some of details about the Christmas Angel Telethon. John Hanna made a motion that we use the color letterhead and it was seconded by Linda Haarstad. No one was opposed. Next Step: Summer will send letter to John Coleman for draft assistance and Karen will check on the price to have 2500 printed from Copies Today/Speedy-Litho.

Adam Haarstad

Adam Haarstad, Linda’s son, will be available to perform duties for seniors to use as community service hours.  He needs 20 hours per week.  We will create a clock in and clock out form to use in keeping track of hours worked.  We will oversee this process by setting a criteria for those that apply for Adam’s assistance.

Tara Kubacki

Tara was voted in as our latest Committee member. Yeah!
