If you want to meet a kind and giving person you probably only have to walk out to your mailbox and say hello to your neighbor. Being a person that was raised here, I can’t imagine not being able to ask for help and not get a response from someone. This is one of Cowlitz County’s greatest strengths.
As I was editing some footage about The Salvation Army’s Christmas Angel Community Center tonight, I was reminded of how different we are as I recalled a conversation I had with Captain Dave. He told me that up north, home of the Western Division Headquarters, Christmas is processed in 2 days. He has never seen a Christmas Center that takes 2 weeks to meet each person, listen the stories and personally take each family through to help them find the right sizes, answer questions and clean up for the next family as they go.
When I was showing the video I was working on to Karen, she told me about a family that recently came to Longview from Seattle. They were shocked that all their needs were answered at our Christmas Angel Community Center. They got clothes, food and toys for their children and were so excited because their single income household did not leave room for frivolities. They were surprised and blessed and excited to make our generous city, their new home.
I meet generous people every day. As someone that hears the needs of smaller organizations that work on the front line of needs, I know of specific needs as they arise. Last year when Love Overwhelming was able to begin offering showers to homeless people every week, it was my own linen closet I visited first. Between several other people, we were able to offer enough shower mats and towels to meet the need.
When I saw the note from Jill, who manages the showers, last week that she had had to throw the shower mats away and they were short on towels, I was quick to post on Living Ministries’ Facebook the need. I shared that post only a few times and was so excited this weekend to get response from our amazing community.
I would like to thank Joanne of Pure Hair Design and Renee of Kerr Car Care for their gifts of shower mats and towels. I am super-excited to deliver them to Love Overwhelming this morning so that our friends will be able to be clean.
I am so blessed to be surrounded with kind people. Thank you Cowlitz County for being my inspiration!
